“At this point, I feel compelled to state that I am vehemently opposed to the use of the term foodie , a word that makes me cringe so deeply my fingers refuse to type this combination of letters and I have to copy-paste it.”

You forgot gourmand, sticky fingers.

So what is a more appropriate and acceptable term –
Foodist, gastronaut, gourmet (galloping or otherwise), epicurean, food nazi, culinary critic?

Exactly, you’ve got it now Bron. They are rather good but no self respecting foodie would admit it.

Don’t worry Barbara, this is from a guy who eats and what’s more enjoys! McDonald’s fries!! http://www.tomatom.com/2006/02/sauce-fit-for-a-bourbon-steak-fit-for-uncle-monty/

Thanks Ed for explaining your thoughts. I can’t claim to have read the book. Actually I hadn’t heard of the book until this week. I first came across the name when a deli called Foodies opened in Auckland in the early ’80’s. It was very good and I rather liked the name. My understanding of the name was as the Oxford said “A person with a strong interest in food.” The Heather Irwin description echoed my feelings. I can understand your dislike of the word if your first sentence is how you see the word. I don’t see it that way.

Stephanie, perhaps we should start the “I am not a f**die” blogroll.

Barbara, I’ve always thought the implication was that the person is indiscriminating of their love of food. All I can say is I try an avoid a round belly and my plate is rarely clean as I don’t eat everything I’m served either because I’m full or don’t like it. I’m actually very picky about what I want to eat to the point of being a fascist. The book The Official Foodie Handbook came out and the phrase caught-on about the same time as the Official Sloan Ranger Handbook. Both were really a joke on the people who bought them. I probaby need to think more on this and post something.

Buy Fresh – do you mind not comment spamming on my blog? By all means comment but the links are gratuatous.

I couldn’t agree more completely with you barbara. How came up with the word anyway?

I am. I’d be interested to know why you dislike the word.

Hadn’t read that on C&Z but I too, LOATHE that expression! Will never use it.
